Today, Trnava is a regional capital with over 70,000 inhabitants and a well-developed infrastructure as well as a rich social and cultural life. The three local universities have around 12,000 students and turn out a labour force of highly-skilled graduates, many of whom go on to work locally in some capacity, as technicians, engineers and managers. The city has become a major manufacturing centre, and produced over 300,000 cars in 2005 alone.
Trnava is ideally located at the ‘cross-roads’ of Europe, and is well-connected by rail and by major roadways extending to the Czech republic to Hungary, and from the Mediterranean to Poland. Bratislava is only 20 km away and there are two international airports within a 30 minute drive. This has made Trnava a natural choice for the international companies and manufacturers who come to take advantage of Slovakia’s low labour costs and business-friendly tax legislation. These companies benefit from some of the lowest wages in Europe and generous tax breaks. In exchange, their presence brings countless benefits locally and nationally, including the skilled job opportunities and direct investment which continue to drive the Slovak economy.
